Janice's stories

Picture

I first rode my moped up to St Cassian’s for an interview with Brother Vincent (oh what a wonderful Brother!) and started working at the end of November 1987.

The Brothers I remember at the start were James, Celestine, Pious, Dominic, Gus, Ben and not forgetting Bro Matthew & Bro Herman.

Brother Herman looked after the grounds though did the paintwork in odd colours! The laundry was dark, blue on one wall and dark purple on  another it was pretty much like that all through the house until Jim and Shelagh arrived as the handyman and cook.

My family used to visit and I have very fond memories of those times. Once, when my children were young Brother Gus would keep them entertained giving them rides on the tractor and trailer. "Hang on tight" he would say, and they would say "faster, faster"!  I’m sure this wouldn't be allowed today with the extra health and safety!

Brother Gus also liked to keep the rabbits down. One weekend he went into the Team Lounge and opened the window and with his rifle decided to shoot the rabbit's out of the lounge window. Someone opened the Team Lounge door and Gus swung around and shot the sofa! Thankfully, no one got hurt and we thought it was hilarious! This was all in the very early days of course.

During the 1990s Sean and Owen came to the Centre. Sean always had a story to tell and Owen was great fun.

More recently, I would just like to say how very sad I feel about Brother Terry dying. I will miss him very much as he very often came in for a chat in the laundry.
